SOFTBALL WINS TWICE ON SATURDAY

VICKSBURG, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team improved to 7-2 on the season with a pair of victories on the second day of the River City Classic in Vicksburg, Miss. The Lions defeated Jackson State 14-4 before picking up an 8-0 win over Alabama A&M.
 
In the opener, UNA overcame an early 2-0 deficit to pull away late. The Lions had 14 runs off 18 hits, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
 
Emma Broadfoot and Hailey Jones each went 3-for-5 at the plate. Broadfoot also drove in six runs, including a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. Sidney Bevis, Harley Stokes, Georgia Land and Meleah Hargett also each posted 2-for-4 showings.
 
Maci Birdyshaw improved to 3-0 in the circle. She worked the first six innings, allowed two earned runs off seven hits with nine strikeouts. Megan Warhurst pitched the final inning without yielding a hit.
 
In the second game, the Lions recorded their second mercy-rule win over Alabama A&M in as many days. Sidney  Revels (2-1) pitched a two-hit shutout and the UNA bats produced eight runs off 11 hits.
 
After scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning, a single run in the fourth gave the Lions a 4-0 lead. UNA scored three more times in the fifth before Mary Grayson Kilpatrick's RBI-single scored Haven Kirby from third to end the game.
 
Broadfoot drove in another run in the second game and finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Bevis and Hargett each went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
UNA will wrap up the event Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. showdown against host Alcorn State.
