SOFTBALL SWEEPS COLGATE TO IMPROVE TO 21-5

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up a pair of mercy-rule home wins over Colgate on Sunday to improve to 21-5 on the season. The Lions won the first game 12-3 in five innings before getting a six-inning 10-2 victory in the second contest.

For the day, the Lions scored 22 runs off 25 hits. Georgia Land went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in four runs. She improved her season batting average to .417 to move into the top 3 of the ASUN statistical leaders.

In each game, UNA took control early by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the opener, a two-run double by Emma Broadfoot was followed by a two-run home run by Land. It was the seventh blast of the season for the senior from Lawrenceburg, Tenn.

Land later scored on another two-run shot by Meleah Hargett to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Land came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. She singled to centerfield to make the score 7-0. Hargett again followed with a two-run single to put the home team ahead 9-0 after two innings.

A three-run third inning increased the lead to 12-0 for UNA. The Lions loaded the bases before getting an RBI-groundout by Taylor Brown. Grace Piotrowski then homered to center to wrap up the scoring for the home team in the opener.

The Raiders managed to score three times in the top of the fourth but could get no closer. Sidney Revels started and worked the first 2.1 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. Alyssa Drogemuller and Megan Warhurst also saw action in the circle for the Lions.

Nine different players recorded a hit for UNA. Sidney Bevis was 3-for-3 with a trio of singles. Land and Hargett also each went 2-for-2 and combined for seven RBI.

The second game featured a similar script. North Alabama sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame, scoring all six runs with two outs.

A sacrifice fly by Hailey Jones and an RBI-single by Harley Stokes gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. Brooke Burback then doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three runs and break the game open. The Lions later scored on an error to again take a 6-0 lead after the first inning.

Broadfoot and Land each drove in runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 8-0 before Colgate got its first hit. The Raiders scored two runs in the top of the third and held the Lions scoreless for the next two frames.

In the bottom of the fifth, UNA loaded the bases and scored on an error to make the score 9-2. The winning run, however, was stranded at third. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions again loaded the bases before a ground ball by Holley Files scored the winning  run. UNA now has five mercy-rule victories on the season.

Stokes was 3-for-4 in the second game as nine players again collected hits for the Lions. Bevis, Jones, Broadfoot and Land added two hits each.

Sophie Golliver worked the first three innings to get the pitching victory. She allowed two runs off four hits to improve to 6-0 on the season.

UNA will now turn its attention to ASUN Conference play. The Lions host Stetson in a three-game series next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. A single game Sunday at noon will wrap up the series.
