SOFTBALL GETS TWO WINS IN MONTGOMERY

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team improved to 15-3 on the season with a pair of victories Friday in the opening day of the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament. The Lions defeated Eastern Kentucky 8-2 before downing Eastern Illinois 10-6.

In the opener, UNA scored all eight runs in the top of the second, third and fourth innings. Harley Stokes gave the Lions the early lead in the top of the second with an RBI-double that scored Meleah Hargett from first base.

After the Colonels plated a single run in the bottom of the inning, UNA took control with four runs in the top of the third. Following a walk by Hailey Jones and a single by Emma Broadfoot, Georgia Land homered to left center. The blast hit the outfield scoreboard and gave the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Hargett followed with a double and later scored on Kalli Daniel's single to left field.

Haven Kirby led off the top of the fourth with a walk. She reached second on an infield single by Lexie Harper before an RBI-double by Sidney Bevis scored two runs. Two batters later, Broadfoot doubled home Bevis to make the score 8-1.

EKU added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning but could get no closer.

Broadfoot finished the opener 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Bevis was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Megan Warhurst recorded the pitching victory. The junior worked the first six innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs. She struck out five to even her record at 1-1 on the season.

Against Eastern Illinois, UNA produced back-to-back five-run innings to grab a big lead before holding off a rally by the Panthers.

The Lions trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning before sending nine batters to the plate. After a double to left center, Bevis scored on an EIU error. Georgia Land then tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run home run

Hargett followed the blast with a single, then scored from first on Harley Stokes' double to right center. Stokes then scored on an EIU error to give UNA a 5-3 lead.

North Alabama extended its lead to 10-3 in the top of the fifth, scoring all five runs with two outs. After loading the bases, the Lions took a 6-3 lead on an RBI-single by Hargett. Stokes then connected on a 1-1 pitch to hit a grand slam.

The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh frames. EIU loaded the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate before Elena Escobare recorded the final out by fielding a ground ball and throwing out the runner at first base.

Land, Hargett and Stokes had two hits each to lead the Lions. Stokes finished with a game-high five RBI.

Sophie Golliver improved to 5-0 with the win in the circle. She worked the first four innings, allowing four runs off three hits.

UNA will remain in Montgomery for two more games on Saturday. The Lions will take on Nicholls State at 9 a.m. before facing Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on the ASU campus.
