LIONS GRAB TWO MORE WINS AT ASU BLACK AND GOLD TOURNAMENT

MONTGOMERY – Two more victories at the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament kept the University of North Alabama softball team unbeaten at the event. The Lions defeated Nicholls State 11-1 in five innings before knocking off Eastern Illinois 7-4. The two wins give UNA a 17-3 record on the season.

In the opener, the UNA bats came alive for 11 runs off 12 hits. After trailing 1-0 early in the contest, the Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the third inning to take control.

Following a triple by Kalli Daniel, a single to left field by Haven Kirby tied the game at 1-1. Back-to-back singles then loaded the bases for Hailey Jones, who doubled to left center and score three runs. Jones later scored on a Nicholls error to give the Lions a 5-1 lead.

After the Colonels went down in order in top of the next frame, a six-run fourth inning by UNA broke the game open. Kirby started the big inning with a home run to left field. The Lions then got RBI-singles by Jones and Georgia Land to make the score 8-1.

Harley Stokes then doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three runs and give UNA an 11-1 lead.

Sidney Revels (4-1) wrapped up the pitching victory in the circle. She worked all five innings, allowing one run off five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

At the plate, nine different UNA batters recorded at least one hit. Kirby was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Jones and Harper also each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

In the second game, the Lions picked up a second victory over Eastern Illinois in the last 24 hours. UNA trailed 3-0 before a six-run fifth inning broke the game open.

Kirby again started this scoring for the Lions. This time, a two-run home run to left field cut the deficit to 3-2.  Sidney Bevis then connected on a two-out double to keep the rally alive.  After an EIU error put runners at the corners, Emma Broadfoot singled through the left side to tie the game at 3-3 and chase the Panthers starter from the circle.

Land drew a walk to load the bases before Meleah Hargett singled to center field to give UNA a 4-3 lead. A blooper by Stokes then fell between two EIU infielders, allowing two more runs to score to extend the North Alabama lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kirby doubled and later scored on an RBI-triple by Mary Grayson Kilpatrick. The Panthers answered with a solo home run in the top of the seventh but could get no closer.

The Lions totaled 11 hits for the game. Kirby and Stokes each went 2-for-3 at the plate with both players driving in two runs. Bevis was also 2-for-4.

In the circle, Maci Birdyshaw picked up the complete-game victory. She allowed four runs off eight hits in seven innings of work, improving to 7-0 on the season.

UNA will close out play at the Black and Gold Tournament with a single game Sunday against Nicholls. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
