SOFTBALL TOPS AUSTIN PEAY, UAB TO IMPROVE TO 10-2

BIRNMINGHAM - The University of North Alabama softball team improved to 10-2 on the season with a pair of wins on the opening day of the 2022 UAB Blazer Invite. The Lions recorded an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Austin Peay before holding off the host Blazers 11-9.

In the opener, UNA got eight runs off nine hits while Sidney Revels pitched a five-hit shutout. After taking a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning, four more runs evoked the eight-run mercy rule.

The Lions started the scoring with a three-run second inning. Haven Kirby started the two-out rally with the first of three straight hits. Her double to center field scored pinch-runner Mary Grayson Kilpatrick from second base. Kirby then scored on an RBI-single by Lexie Harper. Sidney Bevis followed with a run-scoring double down the left field line to give UNA a 3-0 lead.

Harper led off the fourth inning with a single. She reached third before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Hailey Jones.

A four-run fifth inning sealed the win. The Lions had two on and one out before three straight hits ended the game. Harley Stokes reached on an error and later scored on an RBI-single by Kalli Daniel. Kirby then doubled home another run before scoring the winning run on a single up the middle by Harper.

Harper was 4-for-4 in the opener with two RBI and two runs scored. Kirby also scored twice and drove in two runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Revels improved to 3-1 on the year after facing 23 batters without yielding a run. She struck out three and walked one in five innings of work.

The game against UAB featured combined totals of 20 runs, 23 hits and seven errors. UNA raced out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning before holding off a rally by the home team.

The Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame, hitting for the cycle with eight runs off eight hits. A single by Harper, a double by Bevis and a three-run home run by Jones started the scoring.

Emma Broadfoot followed with a double before back-to-back singles by Hargett and Daniel chased the UAB starter from the circle. Daniel's single to left field drove in a run to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.

Another single by Kirby loaded the bases for Harper, who tripled to right field to clear the base and force another pitching change by the Blazers. Harper scored on an infield single by Bevis to give UNA an 8-0 lead.

UAB immediately responded in the bottom of the inning. Four runs by the home team cut the deficit in half.

In the top of the third, Hargett reached on a two-out error. She advanced to third before beating the throw home on a ground ball by Harper to put the Lions ahead 9-4.

UAB's big inning came in the bottom of the third. The Blazers sent nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs off five hits, including two singles, a double, a triple and a leadoff home run. UNA also committed two errors in the frame, leading to a pair of unearned runs that tied the game at 9-9.

The game remained tied until the Lions regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Harper led off the inning with a single. She reached third base before scoring on an infield single by Jones.

The Lions got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Hargett led off the frame with a single. She reached second on a pinch-hit single by Katie Killen and third on a ground ball by Kirby. Harper then drove in her fifth run of the game and seventh of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field.

At the plate, UNA totaled 14 hits, reaching double figures in a game for the eighth time this season. Harper again led the way, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Bevis and Hargett added two hits each while Jones was 2-for-4 with four RBI.
