Joe Brewer was a four-year starter on Lion football and baseball squads, lettering in football in 1949 and from 1952-54, and in baseball in 1950 and from 1953-55. He served in the military in Korea from 1950-52. Brewer was a punter and kicker on the Lion football teams, and also played quarterback. The Lions had a 26-9-1 record during his four years at the school.

He ranked 10th in the nation in extra points in 1954 and was selected as a permanent team captain in football in 1954. He was also selected as the quarterback of the decade for the Lions first ten seasons - 1949-58. Brewer led the Alabama Collegiate Conference in punting in 1949 with a 40.4 average on 36 punts and was selected by the Nashville Banner as quarterback on the Division II All-South team in 1955. He was the Lions Most Valuable Player in baseball in 1955 and graduated from UNA in 1955 with a B.S. degree in Math and Physical Education.

Following his graduation, he coached for 10 years at Coffee High School, helping lead the Yellow Jackets to state championships in football and baseball. He later served as principal at Bradshaw High School for 20 years before retiring. At the time of his induction he was teaching at Mars Hill Bible School.
