LaConger Cohran, a native of Oxford, Miss., was a two-year standout on the UNA women's basketball team from 1983-85 and helped take the Lions to their only Gulf South Conference women's basketball title and to two NCAA Tournaments.  She becomes just the second female inductee into the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame, joining Wanda Beckham, who was inducted in 1993.   Cohran was chosen All-Gulf South Conference in 1984 and 1985, GSC Tournament Most Valuable Player in 1984 and 1985, Kodak All-District IX in 1984 and 1985 and second-team All-American in 1985.

She helped lead UNA to its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 1984 and to a GSC regular-season title, a GSC  Tournament crown and a second NCAA berth in 1985.  She ranks as UNA's third all-time leading scorer, despite playing just two seasons. She scored 30 or more points in a single-game six times and equalled a school-record with 43 points against West Georgia in 1985. She led UNA in scoring both seasons, with 655 points in 1984 for a 21.8 scoring average, and 537 points in 1985 for a 19.9 average. She is the only player in UNA history to score 600 or more points in a season, and her 1985 total ranks fifth.  Cohran's 300 rebounds in 1984 is the second highest total in school history, and her 240 boards in 1985 is seventh.

While at UNA, she shot 54.95 percent from the floor for her career, hitting 477-of-868 shots and added 20 career blocks and 540 rebounds. She set numerous school records, including single-game field goal percentage, hitting 14-of-16 shots from   the floor for 87.5 percent against Delta State in 1985. She graduated from UNA in 1985 and at the time of her induction lived with her family in England, where her husband, staff sergeant Derrell Shelton, was stationed with the U.S. Air Force.
